Having never heard of Shemekia Copeland before, but reading good things about her, this week's album of the week is her 2020 record Uncivil War. The record is a very American, energetic, fresh kind of R&B that is driven forward by a powerful & confident voice full of character and (at times) humorous lyrics which at other times also clearly allude to current issues, be they politics ("Uncivil War"), gun violence "Apple tree and a A45) or a new idea of feminism ("She don't wear pink").
Standout tracks: the bouncy and defiant "Walk until I ride", the sing-along infectious chorus of "Money makes you ugly" and the joyous "Love song".
