Dividend Update: October 25

The Shade Room by Welcome To The Jungle | Podchaser

October was marked by constant and furious grading of exams. In Ecuador, unlike in Germany, you have 4 quarters in a school (as opposed to two halves) and you have to your grades ready for every quarter. Since this is my first year and I didn't want to make a bad impression handing in my grades late, I was manically grading exams to have my grades ready. On top of that, I had two visits from the school director (since I am new) and of course these class also always require a certain amount of detail and preparation. All this is a long way of saying that time was short.

The good news is that

a) I found a place to play basketball (inside - as the rainy season has come down on Quito!) and

b) I had a week of vacation that I used to go to the Ecuadorian jungle

The trip was a highlight and I was able to see lots of wildlife during the (at times night) walks and boat trips: I saw monkeys, dolphins, caimans, piranhas, toucans, snakes, spiders and even the glimpses of a jaguar at night. It was awesome and the sound of the jungle at night - as the comes truly alive - is something truly unique: you hear the sounds of mosquitos, the cries of the monkeys, the water splashing at times from nightly activities, etc.

Ecuador only has around 2% of the Amazon Rainforest, but the area still looks absolutely huge. The jungle of other countries (such as Brazil, for example) must be absolutely staggering and it comes as no surprise to me that they are still discovering new species in that vast and at times still untapped area.

As for the stock market, I checked today and the last month came out about even - so nothing much really happened. Earnings season of course also took off and I'm now catching up on it: So far, there were two earnings releases that have me slightly worried: Alexandria Real Estate, as luck would have it, has gone off a cliff ever since I first bought a few shares and the latest earnings call seemed to indicate that a dividend cut was ahead. It's a small position, but I am somewhat annoyed that after years of having my eye on the stock and then finally buying it, it crashes right now. I am also somewhat puzzled by FS KKR Capital, which continues to pay out more in dividends than it earns in Net Investment Income (NII). This is a troubling development and I might (if this continues to be the case) redeploy those funds to another, better-run BDC.

Right now, I am enjoying the last 3 days of my holidays and then it's back to work with a short sprint to Christmas. November (as always) looks to be a somewhat meager month, but I am at least back to investing so that my income should continue to grow.

For October, I am happy to report that I crossed the 600€ barrier (which according to my tracking homepage is more or less my monthly average by now) and I reached the dividend crossover point, which is the point that marks the moment that I earned more dividends this year (with two months to go) than last year. Below you find two pictures I made during the trip: one from an unlikely friendship between a monkey and a dog in one of the local communities we visited and the second one is the sunset at a lagoon in the jungle, in which we swam (in the river that led to this lagoon there were caimans and anacondas, but the local guides said it was safe to swim in the lagoon and also took a dip themselves, so we joined them - it was awesome (albeit slightly terrifying at the same time!)
