Christmas and the whole month of December raced by me. I was deeply occupied with work until I left Germany for Ecuador shortly before Christmas to spend Christmas and the New Year there with the family of my better half. Most of the time I was there, we were also travelling around and making the most of our time there, seeing beautiful mountains (e.g. climbing up to the sanctuary of the Cotopaxi), going to the beach in Santa Marianita and seeing whales there or spending a day hiking through the jungle and basking in the beautiful water falls there. It was an awesome experience during which I had, for the most part, no connection to, and more importantly, no real interest in, the outside world and the events happening.
I met quite a few people travelling, some of which have travelled for months or even years and I am always fascinated by this, even though I'm not sure this is something I myself, as someone who cherishes some sort of routine, am ultimately up for. I could though easily envisioning myself doing this for a month or two - but for a whole year or even two? I dunno.
It is though an interesting change of perspective, and it was fun talking to the people and hearing their stories. Their common denominator? They were fed up with their work and wanted to break free, which I can relate to. Most of them had saved (at times for years) to do this and were running through their savings now and/or were doing the odd job during their travels to keep their journey going.
My partner and I are discussing this option (among others) ourselves and the dividends which I am able to collect so far on a monthly basis would also go a long way to cover your bills in certain countries (e.g. Ecuador, Thailand which I visited in November, or other Latin American or Asian-Pacific countries known to be cheaper), granting me already a sort of freedom.
These reflections have not yet come to fruition and my better half and I, notoriously weak decision-takers, have to still to work out what's to come. For now, I am happy to close the month of December in which I collected a very pleasing 655,07€ Euros from 43 stocks/funds, propped up by some special dividends (e.g. Main Street):
